Equality and Diversity
The new public sector Equality Duty came into force from 6 April 2011. It consists of a general equality duty which is set out in the Equality Act itself and specific duties.
The aim of the general equality duty is to make equality part of the day-to-day business of councils. It has three objectives:
- eliminate unlawful discrimination, harassment and victimisation and other conduct that is prohibited by the Act.
- advance equality of opportunity between people who share a characteristic and those who don't.
- foster good relations between people who share a characteristic and those who don't.
