Council Tax bandings and how much you pay
All homes have to pay Council Tax - the amount you have to pay will depend on the valuation band your home has been placed in by the Valuation Office. The band is set by the Valuation Office Agency on the basis of its value at 1 April 1991. Even new homes are valued on the basis of what they would have been worth in 1991.
Colchester Borough Council sets the council tax every year. The amount of tax you pay depends on how much Colchester Borough Council, and certain other public bodies in the area, need to spend on services.
You may feel your Council Tax band is wrong. Please use the links below to see useful information to help you decide what to do.
Please be aware there are agents and firms who try to take advantage of people, charging commission for attempting to claim refunds, which is unnecessary. The Valuation Office will help you for free, to give you advice and help with any process - there's no reason you should lose out if your band is wrong.
