Frequently Asked Questions

We understand that you may have some questions about your responsibilities as a producer of business waste and the services that we provide.

We hope that you will find all of the information you require either on the business recycling and waste collection pages or below, but if any of your queries are not answered, please click here to ask one of our experts. A member of our friendly team will get back to you within 2 working days.

  • Q:

Do my business rate payments cover the cost of my recycling and waste collections?

    A:

The National Non-Domestic Rates (NNDR or "business rates") does not fund the collection, treatment or disposal of recycling or waste generated by your business. Business rates are collected by Colchester Borough Council on behalf of central government, and the amount you pay is based on the rateable value of the premises occupied. As different types of business could occupy the same amount of space (rateable value) but produce very different amounts or types of waste, it would be unreasonable to include charges for its collection, treatment or disposal within the business rate calculation.

  • Q:

Can I take the waste generated by my business home and put it out for collection on with my domestic recycling and waste?

    A:

No, the waste produced by your business, or within your workplace, is classified as businesses waste and should not be taken home for your local authority to collect alongside your domestic recycling and waste. All businesses produce waste and this waste is regulated by legislation. As a business you are required by law to dispose of your waste through trade or business waste collections. There is a charge for these services as it is not covered by business rates payments.

  • Q:

Can I take my business waste to the local Household Recycling Centre (HRC) for disposal?

    A:

No, the HRCs are for household waste only; business recycling and waste is not permitted at these sites. If your business' waste is taken to a HRC you will not be provided with the waste transfer documentation that you are legally required to have. Businesses which take their waste to HRCs are breaking the law.

  • Q:

    A:

  • Q:

My bin has been emptied but the waste next to it hasn't been; why is this and what should I do?

    A:

The waste next to your bin is known as side waste and to ensure best value for all of our customers, we operate a strict 'no collection of side waste' policy. If you would like to have this waste collected you can request an extra empty by calling our Customer Service Centre on 01206 282700, or place your side waste in your empty bin and wait for your next scheduled collection. If you find that you regularly have side waste you may benefit from a larger bin, more frequent collections or upgrading your contract to include a collection of your paper, card, cardboard and glass.
